10 Morale-Boosting New-Hire Orientation Tips

Hello All!

Today I’m going to share with you some tips that I’ve discovered while learning about different new-hire orientation practices. These tips are universal, and can really aid your online and in-person orientation programs!

It is important to set the tone for your company and make the employee feel welcome and find comfort and confidence during orientation and training activities. During this inaugural time, you define what makes your company special and how you will foster your new employee’s growth alongside your organization’s for the long term. Boosting your employee’s morale from the beginning will ensure an easy transition into the workplace.

1. Before the first day of work, make sure to inform your new employee of company policies regarding dress code, leave, insurance and other pertinent, company-specific information. This can easily be included in your @work Online Orientation.

2. Keep your employee in-the-loop right from the beginning. Send your new employee a welcome letter letting them know what their first day will consist of before they even enter the building. This preview will help them plan their day and ease any anxiety of the unknown.

3. Make your new employee feel welcome by immediately connecting them with their peers. Gather employees that will be working directly with the new hire and ask them to speak to the new-hire about daily tasks and their responsibilities within the department.

4. Give a personalized gift. Whether it is a name placard or a notepad with their name on it, or items displaying your company’s logo or mission, give your new employee something tangible to feel welcome.

5. In order to give them the resources they need to succeed and be comfortable, schedule the new employee’s department lead or manager to work on their first day. Even if the supervisor does not participate in the initial orientation and training process, their presence will help the employee transition easier and feel part of the team.

6. Provide a new employee mentor or teammate. Help your new employee feel a sense of immediate camaraderie by asking a seasoned employee to be a buddy to your newly initiated employee, which also instills a sense of teamwork.

7. Foster individual growth and development. While you cultivate an atmosphere of teamwork, make it clear that you also see them as an individual with their own attributes that you plan to mine to increase the value of your organization.

8. Set clear and detailed expectations, and praise your new employee’s strengths. Letting your new employee know you think highly of their skills and potential in their new position, you build their self-esteem in regards to the workplace.

9. Celebrate your new hire’s arrival. Depending on your company’s culture, as well as the circumstance and position being brought on, there are many ways to do so. Ask your current employees to bring their favorite dishes to reveal their tastes and personalities to the new employee. Purchase a cake with your new employee’s name on it. Consider decorating your conference room with balloons, streamers and confetti to create a festive atmosphere. The party can act as an ice breaker with their new coworkers. However, use your best judgment and discretion when deciding what celebrations would be appropriate for the occasion.

10. Provide your new employee with the supplies they need, including business cards, computer and Internet access, telephone and voice mail connection as well as basic office supplies, right from the get-go. Making them feel comfortable and prepared will ensure a smooth start.
